PPI-SA Coach Yamkela’s Road to Success

In today’s blog, Coach Yam shares his journey with PPI and some of the opportunities he has had during his time with the program, dating back to when he was just 9 years old!

Coaching began as my job, now it is my passion.

My name is Yamkela “Yam” Nako, I’m a 25 year old post graduate from Durban, South Africa. I have been a part of PeacePlayers International-SA since it began in 2001. I began as a primary school participant at St. Augustines primary school.  Ever since then, I have never left the programme. I joined the leadership development programme whilst in high school until I matriculated. During my first year in University, I was called to be a coach in Wentworth, and never looked back. Four years later, I am now an area coordinator in that same city and I have recently graduated with a National Diploma in Sport Management from the Durban University of Technology.

Me at graduation

I have been fortunate enough to be selected to represent our organization on platforms I never thought I would have been exposed to. In 2013 I was selected to be a Laureus YES Leader and graduated as a YES Protégé. In 2015, I was selected for the UNOSDP Camp that took place in Berlin, Germany. I was so excited and my family was so proud of me. This was my first international trip, and it proved to be one of the best learning experiences for me. This year has also been nothing short of awesome as I was selected to represent PPI-SA and facilitate sessions in partnership with Beyond Sport SA in Cape Town. For two weeks we traveled and taught basketball in underprivileged communities such as Gugulethu and Oudsthroon.

Looking to the future; I believe I am on the right track to achieving my long term and short term goals thanks to the connections and relationships I have made at PPI-SA. Thank you to PeacePlayers International for all the amazing opportunities that have been given to me and my fellow coaches.
