Coach Doug Overton of the Brooklyn Nets, joining PeacePlayers International-Cyprus (PPI-CY) at our summer camp, led a coaching clinic for over 42 basketball coaches from across the island. Assisting Coach Overton was former WNBA Champion Kelly Schumacher and fellow PPI-CY summer camp guest. 42 basketball coaches from across the island attended the clinic, including the Cyprus national women’s and men’s team coaches, the national U18 and U15 coaches for both boys and girls and Marios Argyrou from the sport development branch of the Cyprus Sport Authority.
A demo team of senior boys and girls PPI participants from our summer camp practiced hard during the prior days of the camp to show their best game for the clinic. All 64 camp participants were also in attendance to watch the 2-hour coaches show.
The air was thick with excitement and energy from the crowd, the players, and the visiting coaches. Coach Doug and our demo team put together an excellent show, starting with simple fundamentals and working up to complex cooperation focused drills. While one may hear the word clinic and think basic x’s and o’s, this could be described as a show. Coach Overton held the crowd fully engaged with his vibrant personality, keeping all of the kids on and off the court hyped up and waiting to learn more.
We are so thankful and grateful to have both Kelly and Doug joining us here at camp this summer. It’s a fabulous opportunity not just for our PeacePlayers participants but also for our coaches and our organization as a whole.
More to come from both Coach Overton and Schumacher, stayed tuned to our upcoming blogs for interviews on their experiences as members of our PeacePlayers family at this year’s summer camp!
The PeacePlayers Basketball Camp was supported by the US Embassy’s Bicommunal Support Program, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and the Brooklyn Nets.
