PPI-SA Coaches and LDP Participants Construct a Garden Tunnel at St. Leo Primary School

St. Leo students perform a traditional dance in celebration of "Spring Day."

On Thursday, September 1st, PPI-SA Molweni Coaches and Leadership Development Program participants helped construct a Garden Tunnel at St. Leo Primary School, a partner school of the PPI-SA program in Molweni, to celebrate “Spring Day” in South Africa. The event was sponsored by Nedbank and community leader Barbara Ndlovu, who brought along some of her colleagues to help with the construction. In addition to working on the tunnel, we all had the opportunity to enjoy the various traditional dances and activities performed by the students to welcome springtime.

The end result of a hard day's work!

Everyone at the school, including Principal Mrs. Themba, was excited about the garden and its ability to provide fresh, nutritious vegetables for the students at St. Leo’s. Being that St. Leo’s is a “no- fee school,” many learners typically have to walk significant distances to get to school, and oftentimes, school is the only place where these students get fed.

All in all, the day was an enormous success. Nedbank awarded the Molweni Flames, the community basketball club run by Barbara, which features many of our coaches and some of our LDP participants, with a R10,000 check acknowledging the fantastic work the club is doing in and around the Molweni community. PPI-SA Area Coordinator, Sifiso Mthembu, is the team’s captain. Congratulations, Molweni Flames, and Happy Spring, South Africa!
