PPI – ME Guests of honor: Win Sheridan and Brendan Tuohey

Brendan, Tal, Dan and Win (back row, l. to r.) at a girls' Twinning in Jeursalem

Last week, we received a visit from PPI board member Win Sheridan and Executive Director Brendan Tuohey, who made the long plane trip from Washington, D.C. to check out the work we’re doing on the ground. Although Brendan has been to the region numerous times over the years, this was Win’s first trip to the site. Win got a chance to meet hundreds of our Palestinian and Israeli kids in Israel and the West Bank. The action started immediately upon landing Sunday evening, when Win and Brendan traveled straight from the airport to the Hand-in-Hand School gym in Jerusalem, where they caught our session with women’s golf star Morgan Pressel. After that, we decided to give them a break and let them rest up for the activity-packed days ahead of them.

The next morning started out with a tour of the Old City of Jerusalem, led by a tour guide named Martin, who also happens to be the father of one of our longtime PeacePlayers, Yuval. He gave them some of the city’s rich and complicated history and also shared how happy he was that his daughter has had a chance to be a part of PeacePlayers. After that, Win and Brendan drove straight to Ramallah, where they caught a basketball clinic with Palestinian girls in the Jalazone refugee camp. Win got right into the action, lining up for relays together with our girls. And was that it for the day’s events? No way! From Ramallah, Win and Brendan drove back to Jerusalem, where they got to practice with a group of Palestinian and Israeli league players from East Jerusalem and Holon, and then catch a professional Eurocup game, witnessing Hapoel Jerusalem succumb to Ukranian team BC Donetsk.

Day three started with a trip to the Dead Sea, where Win, Brendan and a couple of our staff members got to dip in the extra buoyant, salty waters. Then it was once again back to Jerusalem for another Twinning, this time for one team from East and another from West Jerusalem. There they were also joined by Tal Alter from the PPI headquarters, who was visiting Israel with family, and American basketball player Dan Grunfeld. The Twinning was followed up by a session of PPI’s Peace Education Curriculum, led by members of the girls’ Leadership Development Program, who showed off their most impressive facilitation skills.

Win on the court with Jerusalem Minis

On the fourth and final day of Win and Brendan’s visit, we held the first “Minis” Twinning of the season for kids from Keshet School in West Jerusalem, and Beit Safafa in the East. After meeting the Jerusalem Minis, Win and Brendan got on the court with our Ein Rafa Minis, who despite the cold temperatures, were in high spirits! After that, it was sadly time for Win and Brendan to head to the airport. They both told us they are going home with good memories a plenty, and Win had some especially kind words to share about his first experience in the Middle East:

“It was truly awesome to be at the twinnings to witness it first-hand! To see Jewish and Arab girls and boys playing together as a team and having fun was incredible! It just seemed natural for them to be together and, obviously, true friendships are being built. The leadership session was excellent, as well! I have no doubt that some of the girls will emerge as true leaders and even some will become PPI coaches, but, regardless, all benefit a great deal from the program. The positive attitude, confidence, relationship skills, discipline, etc. they get from it will serve them well in the years to come. Overall, it was a phenomenal experience that I will never forget!”

Coach Robert “Bo Bo” Jurkovic Visits PPI – Middle East

Coach Robert "Bo Bo" Jurkovic led practices with some of our younger participants during his time with PPI-ME.

Some  of the strong selling points for playing with PeacePlayers International is that a PeacePlayer learns to think outside the box, meet and befriend players from different and traditionally averse communities, and develop greater social skills and awareness. But on top of all these important experiences, PPI is a good place to learn the game of basketball and meet top-notch basketball figures from abroad.  Thanks to the America House Life Skills Event Series, generously supported by the United States Consulate in Jerusalem, our young PeacePlayers have the opportunity to do just that.

For example, last week PPI – ME hosted coach Robert Jurkovic – a renowned junior basketball coach from Croatia – for a weeklong series of basketball clinics and conflict resolution workshops. His visit was part of a cultural exchange between regions that have experienced conflict and the role basketball can take in improving the lives and life-skills of youth in these regions. Robert (aka Bo Bo) is no stranger to working in foreign, and even conflict-ridden environments. He has worked in places like Israel and Italy, before returning to his home country of Croatia. Until a couple of years ago he coached the Croatian boys cadets national team, and today he runs the boys and men section of the Rijeka basketball club in Croatia. He helped cultivate many basketball players who went on to illustrious athletic careers.

Robert, who is a long-time professional colleague of  PPI – ME Director of Basketball Operations Vito Gilic, came to Israel to lead a series of PPI – ME activities and to meet the girls and boys who play and learn with PPI – ME. Robert led practices for teams of all ages. He came to Keshet School in West Jerusalem and ran two practices with Jewish boys and girls from grades 1 – 4. A day later, he visited Ein Raffa – an Arab community near Jerusalem – where he led practice for our grade 1- 2 teams. He said it was a refreshing experience, as he hadn’t worked with young children for such a long time. Robert also got a chance to work with PPI – ME’s older players. He led our weekly LDP practice, challenging the players with drills that develop physical skills and quick thinking.

He also led a workshop with a group of female PeacePlayers at the America House facility. He spoke to them about basketball, life in a conflict zone (for them the Middle East and for him the wars in the Balkans). Then, he showed them the movie “Once Brothers” about the falling out between former best friends and basketball players Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac. Robert noted that this story, as well as basketball in general, can contribute to understanding the “other” and ourselves, beyond political masks or stereotypes.

It was a busy week for Coach Robert; but it was no doubt just as satisfying. The lessons he taught the children and youth of PPI – ME – both on and off the court – will not be soon forgotten, and they are bound to help the young PeacePlayers learn not only the importance of practicing their dribble and lay up, but also how peace and understanding can find room in their lives through basketball.

Welcome to Twinning Season!

Introducing the theme of the twinning: trusting your teammates

Ask anyone at PPI – ME about their favorite time of year, and you will probably hear: “Twinning season!” This exciting period marks the start of integrated activities between Arab and Jewish communities enrolled in PPI – ME’s Twinned Basketball Clubs (TBC) program. After practicing for approximately two months in their local neighborhoods, youth come together for mixed practices, games, tournaments and the occasional social event – such as a field trip last year to see a professional basketball game. All PPI – ME twinning partners meet at least twice per month, while many veteran participants twin once or twice each week.

Partner drills

Twinnings always include a theme emphasizing PeacePlayer values such as leadership, sportsmanship or teamwork. At a recent twinning with 6th – 7th grade girls from the Keshet School and the community of Beit Safafa, the lesson of the day centered on the importance of trusting one’s teammates. In pairs, the girls ran through exercises requiring cooperation and coordination with their partners. Without faith in their teammates, they would not have been able to successfully execute the drills.

Twinning partners prepare for a scrimmage

The event ended with a scrimmage, allowing the girls to showcase their skills and put into practice the lessons learned about teamwork. The twinning, one of many to come for this group, represented a steppingstone on the path towards forming one cohesive basketball team. Reaching this goal is the essence and purpose of twinning season. So, if a PPI – ME staff member ever inquires as to the most enjoyable part of the year, you will know why the best answer is an emphatic “Twinning season!”
