19th Bar’s Bracket Competition Supporting PeacePlayers International

PPI - South Africa's "Tournament of Champions," their own version of March Madness.

Last year, PPI staged a friendly bracket competition among its extended family, inviting hoop-heads worldwide to match their college basketball knowledge in one of the sport’s signature traditions. Though only bragging rights were on the line, contestants who made a donation were eligible for special prizes.

This year, PPI’s been invited to participate in a slightly different competition, and we’d like to open it up to all our fans.

19th Bar in Washington, DC, (the home of PPI’s upcoming Party for Peace) has put together its own bracket pool, with a charitable twist: half of all proceeds will benefit PPI! We’d like to invite all of you to join us. Here’s how:

Entry costs $20 per player, and 19th is expecting 30-50 participants overall.

First prize in the bracket gets 60% of what’s left after PPI’s donation ($180-$300), second place gets 30%, third place gets 10% and fourth place gets a $20 bar tab. (If you’re out of town, we’ll figure out a comparable prize).

If you are a DC local, you’ll get special deals during any tournament games you watch at 19th Bar, just for participating!

To pay the $20 entrance fee, click here and enter “bracket” into the comment box.

To fill out your bracket, click here. (You’ll need to register for a free Yahoo! ID if you don’t already have one.)

Register and fill out your brackets ASAP. The cut-off time is Wednesday, March 16 at 5pm!

As always, thank you for your continued support of PeacePlayers International. Best of luck, and enjoy the games!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from PeacePlayers International!

Everybody’s a little bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. But remember that the island is more than just shamrocks and Guinness. In this video, we take an inside look at PPI’s efforts to bridge divides between Catholic and Protestant children in Belfast, a city where the vast majority of schools are still segregated along religious lines and huge, concrete “Peace Walls” still divide Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods.

What makes St. Patrick’s Day even sweeter for PPI is that it corresponds with the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year – March Madness! PPI’s set up its own bracket competition  – the organization is giving away a PPI prize pack and needs your help to get over the top in an online giving contest.

The competition is totally free, but PPI is asking those who participate to consider making a $10 donation to its “March Goodness” campaign in lieu of an entry fee. “March Goodness” is a competition among nonprofits to try to generate the most online donations over the course of March Madness, with corporate grants up to $10,000 as prizes. The total amount raised doesn’t matter this round – only the total numbers of donations received – so even a small contribution can make a big difference.
