This week’s blog post is written by guest blogger Michalis Seraphim, PeacePlayers-Cyprus coach from Kiti, Cyprus. Coach Michalis will be one of the 11 coaches on the court with PPI-CY during this year’s summer camp which begins Monday morning July 29th.
As we get ready for our Summer Camp in Agros, I can’t help but be excited as we are about to work together with ex-NBA player and assistant coach of the Brooklyn Nets, Doug Overton, and WNBA champion and beach volleyball athlete, Kelly Schumacher.
PeacePlayers International – Cyprus’s (PPI-CY) summer camp is the biggest event of the year for PPI-CY and it perfectly compliments this year’s activities. Besides hosting established events such as twinnings and Leadership and Development camps, this year marked a lot of milestone accomplishments for our organization.
For the first time, we had an all girls tournament that involved two championship teams, Apollon Limassol and Zenon Basketball Larnaca, along with two mixed PeacePlayers teams.
For the first time, we held an LDP camp and our spring tournament in the Turkish-Cypriot Community.
Also for the first time, we had a mixed team, comprised of Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots, represent us as a united Cypriot team in an international tournament in Norway, the Hansa Cup.
These three milestones demonstrate how PeacePlayers and the game of basketball leads to breaking barriers, transforming stereotypes and changing perceptions that lead to an improved mentality.
With these things in mind, I believe that this year’s Summer Camp is the event that will sum up the 2012-2013 season in the best possible way because it is so much more than JUST a camp.
This year, PeacePlayers will host around 40 coaches from all over Cyprus at a coaching clinic, during which coach Doug Overton will be the primary speaker.
Anatomy of Peace seminars and Life Skills lessons, led by conflict resolution and personal development experts, will be held for the children participating.
Fun activities, such as treasure hunts and video filming, are established as the “coolest” activities of the camp.
And of course, there will be intensive basketball practices, in which the children will be able to improve their game and learn new skills through the help of our expert guests, Doug and Kelly.
With all this to look forward, wouldn’t you be excited?
