Last week you got to know some of PPI-SA’s amazing basketball courts, and this week we are pleased to put the spotlight on the most important people in PPI-SA, our participants. This week we interviewed Siyanda Zulu from Umbumbulu’s LDP program. It’s easy to see that Siyanda is one of the best players on the court, and he is just as humble and genuine as he is talented. He plays with his whole heart, and his passion is a refreshing boost of energy to anyone around him. We are so happy to spotlight such an wonderful basketball player and leader in the PPI-SA program.
Name : Siyanda Zulu
Home Town: Umbumbulu, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Years playing with PPI-SA: 5
What is your favorite part of playing basketball?
I love to play in the post- the “Big Man” position, and use my height to make post moves and score. I’m the best shooting when I’m inside the paint. I love seeing my teammates and my coach, they are a big reason why I love to play so much.
What is the most important lesson you have learned from playing with PeacePlayers?
It doesn’t matter where you travel to play, every team you play is the same as you, they are not so different. We are all people no matter where we are from.
Has PeacePlayers helped you to form friendships on/off the court?
Yes, I have made many friends. I made a very good friend in Molweni, Cebiso. We played against one another in the LDP program. Molweni is so far from Umbumbulu, and because of PPI, we can now stay connected. My best friend in Umbumbulu is Njabula, we started playing PPI together in Primary school, he went to Duze and I went to Tobi. Now we go to the same high school, have the same class, and still are teammates on the LDP team.
What are your future goals for basketball and for your life?
No one from Umbumbulu has ever gone into the city (Durban) and played basketball. My goal is to be that person. I want to study at university and play basketball. I want to study business and one day be a manager. I also love coaching young basketball players, and I hope to work for PeacePlayers as a coach.
Favorite Basketball player?
I love coach Mtu Zulu. He is so fast! He can steal the ball from anyone on defense, just takes it from you before you even know its left your hand.
