For the past 2 weekends, PPI-CY has been organizing Twinnings, where PPI-CY teams from the northern Turkish-Cypriot side of Cyprus play basketball with a PPI-CY team from the southern Greek-Cypriot side of Cyprus. During these twinnings children from the two communities get mixed up so they can play together in a game that emphasizes teamwork and fun. PPI-CY will host a total of 12 twinnings this year, bringing a total of 300 kids together at least 2 times. For at least half of the kids, it is there first opportunity for up close interaction with children from the ‘other’ community.
In addition to our twinning program, PPI-CY also participates in friendly matches with other non-PPI-CY teams around the island. So far this year the PPI-CY team in Dali participated in 2 friendly matches with the club team of ENAD. Friendly matches are a great opportunity for the kids to build on their skills, and get more comfortable playing in a competitive environment. Although we do not keep score during a friendly match, the children are very excited and motivated to play hard in front of their peers.
Above is a short video from a friendly match back in December between the PPI-CY Dali team (in yellow) and the ENAD youth team (in blue). At the end you can see Pandelis (13 years old) making a nice jump shot. PPI-CY will continue to hold friendly matches throughout the rest of this year.
